Shipping a Hyacinth Macaw is a highly regulated, complex, and expensive process due to the species' status as an endangered animal. Hyacinth Macaws are protected under Appendix I of the CITES Treaty. This means moving them across international borders requires extensive legal paperwork to prove they were bred in captivity and are not part of the illegal wildlife trade. Because they are the largest parrot species in the world, they cannot travel in an airplane cabin and must be transported via specialized air live-animal cargo or ground transport.
Legal and Permit Requirements To ship a Hyacinth Macaw legally, you must secure the following documentation well in advance:
Macaw-Grade Crates: Transport boxes must be structurally reinforced to withstand powerful chewing.
Isolation: Birds must be shipped in individual crates—even bonded pairs—to prevent stress-induced injuries during transit.
In-Transit Care: Crates are typically equipped with privacy barriers, hard fruits like apples to provide hydration without creating a mess, and secure feeding dishes.
Specialist Logistics: Most owners hire an IPATA-certified (International Pet and Animal Transportation Association) live-animal relocation specialist to manage customs clearance and airline handling.
Specialist live-animal air cargo is required for the safe delivery of live Hyacinth Macaws worldwide. Delivery and Transport Details
Specialist Air Cargo: Live birds travel via licensed carriers using climate-controlled, secure animal transport containers.
Air Freight Only: Live birds travel via specialized airline cargo programs (like live-animal air freight) in custom, appropriately sized wooden or plastic crates with wire mesh ventilation and perches.
Climate Control: Cargo holds used for live animals are pressurized and temperature-regulated to protect the bird from extreme weather
